4-Wheeler Banded Application
If the competition that matters is in the planted band, there is no reason to pay to treat the ground between the rows.
In a young stand the competition that costs you growth is the competition sitting right on top of the seedling. Treating a band down the row deals with that and leaves the interbed alone.
Less ground treated means less product, which usually means a lower cost per acre than a broadcast pass. It also leaves cover between the rows, which some landowners want kept for their own reasons.
The trade is precision. Banding only works if the rows can be followed and the ground will carry a four-wheeler cleanly, and if the band is placed where the roots actually are.
What we look at on the tract
- Row spacing and how well the rows can still be seen and followed
- Seedling height and condition, and how close a band can safely be run
- Which weeds are present, and whether they are in the band or across the whole site
- Ground firmness, ruts and wet spots along the rows
- The band width the site calls for
- Whether a broadcast application would be needed anyway, making banding a false economy
How the work runs
You get the banded option priced against the broadcast alternative, in writing, before the work is scheduled — including the cases where banding would not be enough and we would say so.
Herbicides are mixed on site. Band width and row starts are set and checked before the run, and someone accountable is present while the work goes on, so a drifting band gets caught on the day rather than the next growing season.
